Romano's on Foundry Drive is close to a shopping and food arcade, the Tannery.

The building in Hillsborough is still on fire and billowing smoke is spreading to the suburbs of Woolston, Ferrymead and Sumner.

The smoke is considered toxic because it contains plastic, including polystyrene.

Canterbury Medical Officer of Health Dr Ramon Pink said exposure could worsen pre-existing health conditions such as asthma and heart disease.

The Asthma and Respiratory Foundation is warning respiratory conditions may worsen if exposed to this smoke which causes burning eyes, sore throats and coughing.

Its research and education manager Joanna Turner said that the best thing people could do is stay indoors and keep doors and windows closed until the smoke clears.

She said those experiencing flare-ups should contact their GP or call Healthline for advice.

Eleven fire crews were sent to battle the fire at the 2000sqm single-storey property shortly after 1am.

By this morning crews were scaled back to seven appliances.

All those who were inside the building have been accounted for.

An RNZ reporter at the scene said everything inside appeared to be destroyed and the area was still smokey.

Emergency services are still to confirm the cause of the fire.

Fire and Emergency said there were no houses nearby but people should avoid the area as there was a considerable amount of smoke.

The health and safety message is to keep doors and windows shut and to keep away from any open area if there is smoke.

People with heart or lung conditions, pregnant women, young children and the elderly are asked to stay indoors to avoid the smoke.
