Capital and Coast DBH has confirmed the Taranaki Street testing centre is fully booked for tomorrow, but other testing centres still have capacity.
Earlier, Covid-19 Response Minister Chris Hipkins announced Wellington would move to alert level 2, while the rest of the country remains at level 1.
The Wellington region will move to alert level 2 from 6pm tonight until 11.59pm on Sunday.
It comes after a person who travelled from Sydney to Wellington tested positive for Covid-19 upon their return to New South Wales.
The Ministry of Health advised people who have been at locations of interest in Wellington to call Healthline.
"We are experiencing exceptional call volumes and cannot answer your call right now," the answering voice machine tells callers, adding that further information was available online.
People on social media have been complaining about extremely long wait times if they do get through. Compass Health, Tū Ora, which runs the site is advising anyone who fits those criteria to ring Healthline first.
It said it was very busy and there would be a wait.
A new testing centre was due to be opened at the Haitaitai Park Netball courts this afternoon. A GP clinic testing in Karori said it had done about 10 times its usual number of tests.
