A motorist has died after a crash on State Highway 1 north of Wellington this evening.
The two-car crash happened between Peka Peka and Te Horo near the intersection with Te Hapua Road just before 8pm.
Police say the driver and only occupant of one of the cars died at the scene.
The driver of the second car has been airlifted to hospital with serious injuries.
Police are seeking sightings of one of the cars - a black 1998 Nissan Terrano - which was travelling north before the crash.
Drivers of vehicles in the area with dashcams are also asked to check for any footage of this vehicle.

The highway is closed between Waikanae and Te Horo and isn't expected to re-open for several hours.
There are no diversions in place.
