A person has died after a vehicle hit a pedestrian at Rakaia 60km south of Christchurch this morning.
Police said the incident occurred on State Highway 1 between Chertsey Line Road and Pendarves Rakaia Road around 6.30am.
SH1 was closed for several hours but reopened just before 11am.
The Serious Crash Unit attended the scene and an investigation into the circumstances of the crash is continuing, police say.
