Firefighters expect to be working on a vegetation fire in the Upper Hutt suburb of Trentham for several more days.
Fire and Emergency said crews made good progress on the fire ground today.
The fire has not grown and remains under control at 14 hectares.
Helicopters with monsoon buckets have stopped operations for the day and ground firefighters will scale back this evening, leaving some to monitor overnight.
Fire and Emergency said operations would continue over the next few days, as crews manage hotspots and get rid of any fuel within 15 to 30 metres of the perimeter.
Investigators are trying to establish what started the blaze.
Residents in Trentham and Silverstream have been warned smoke may be visible in the area over the next few days.
Fire and Emergency said anyone who was affected by the smoke, particularly downwind of the fire, should keep their doors and windows closed and call Healthline if they need medical advice.
