Environment Southland said the Invercargill-based office was not a location of interest and the closure was a precautionary measure.

Staff were not required to self-isolate at this stage.

The council said its staff were well equipped to work from home until they received further information and could make a decision about reopening.

Chief executive Rob Phillips said the safety and well-being of staff and the community were their highest priority.

"We now have systems well embedded that allow our staff to set up and work from home very quickly, so our services can continue," he said.

"We really appreciate that the visitor to our office has been very open with us about their contact and this has allowed us to take precautionary measures."

Environment Southland can be contacted via phone and email.
