A Wellington Free Ambulance was broken into overnight in Lower Hutt while paramedics responded to a medical incident.

Paramedics were tending to a person at an address on Waiwhetu Road, where the vehicle was parked, about 12.11am.

Although the ambulance was left locked, the paramedics realised medical drugs and lifesaving equipment, including a drug kit, airway kit, oxygen bag and medical air bag, were missing from it when they returned.

Wellington Free Ambulance warned the drugs that were taken could be dangerous and cause risk to life if taken incorrectly.

Operations manager Eric Tibbott said the items were taken from the storage compartment.

It would cost about $15,000 to replace the stolen items, which were vital equipment for the emergency service, Tibbott said.

"It is really disappointing that this has occurred to a vital lifesaving service that should be off limits to a criminal act, and we encourage anyone with information to please come forward so we can return the equipment," senior sergeant Richard Potton said.

Anyone with information can call police on 105, quoting file number 220902/9477, or anonymously via Crime Stoppers on 0800 555 111.
