Police are investigating how a young woman died after a single-vehicle crash in Auckland's Māngere this morning.

In a statement early this morning, police said emergency services responded to the crash on State Highway 20, Mangere about 3.20am.

A 19-year-old woman died in what police had described as "a serious incident", and another person was arrested.

But in an update just before 8am, police said a 20-year-old man was "assisting" with their inquiries.

Police said they were trying work out what happened before the crash.

The road is closed at the Puhinui and SH20B onramp and the Roscommon Road and Cavendish Drive onramp.

Travel to the airport via SH20B (Puhinui Road) will now be via Papatoetoe and SH20A.

Police said diversions would be in place for some time while the scene was investigated.

Motorists are advised to avoid the area and take the alternative routes where possible.
