MetService is closely monitoring a subtropical low moving toward the East Cape, which could bring more heavy rain on Wednesday.
MetService meteorologist Jessie Owens told Morning Report the area going to be worst hit was again Gisborne and after the recently deluge and damage it could be add to the destruction already experienced.
"I'm sure there'll be particularly sensitive to any significant amount of rain so, it's not it's not good news for them," she said.
"It does look like we're going to be seeing a period of heavy rain. As it's still a few days out, it depends a lot on the track of the cyclone, it's still jumping around a little bit in the model. So we'll be able to tell in another day or two exactly how much rain we're looking at.
"We are expecting to issue a watch for heavy rain later on this morning and that could possibly be upgraded to a warning if we get closer to the event.
Last week, Cyclone Hale left a trail of destruction, with some remote communities needing essential supplies delivered by the Defence Force.
Slips and debris have now been cleared in many places and the main coastal route, State Highway 35, has reopened for vehicles to pass.
Owens said the system wouldn't be as severe as last week's weather.
"Last week system was a ex tropical cyclone, this, this is a subtropical low, it's never been a tropical cyclone. So it's not as deep and it's not as intense, but it does have the potential to bring that heavy rain, and those those strong south-easterly winds as well."
MetService expects also expects isolated showers for most in the South Island on Wednesday, possibly with heavy downfalls in Kahurangi National Park and Buller in the afternoon.
There is rain forecast on Thursday Rain for Coromandel, Gisborne and Hawke's Bay, possibly heavy, with isolated showers elsewhere, but a dry day for Kapiti Coast and Wellington.
In the South Island isolated showers in the west are expected, then rain in Fiordland, Southland and Clutha later.
