One person has died after the car they were in collided with a power pole on Canterbury's State Highway 79, just south of Geraldine.
Police said they were called to the single-vehicle crash on the Geraldine-Fairlie Highway about 6.15pm.
A spokesperson earlier said one person was reported to be in a serious condition, but they have since died from their injuries.

SH79 remains CLOSED this evening following a serious crash.

The road remains closed due to powerlines being down at the intersection with Kennedy Street and there are diversions in place via Tiplady Road.
Lines company Alpine Energy said it expected all connections to be back up at midnight.
