Police in Dunedin have made one arrest in relation to a drive-by shooting in the city last week.

But they have also admitted sending officers - including members of the Armed Offenders Squad - to the wrong house in the aftermath.

Last Friday (10 March) there were reports of shots being fired from one vehicle at another around 4.40pm on Thomas Burns Street in the city centre.

Cordons were put in place on Brighton Road, in the city's southwest, but no suspects were located.

"Enquiries revealed the occupants of that address are not involved in the incident in any way," Detective Sergeant Hayden Smale said.

On Tuesday police searched an address in Highgate, arresting a 25-year-old man who will appear in Dunedin District Court on Wednesday charged with attempted murder.

"The investigation is ongoing, and police are working to establish the circumstances of the incident, and of events which have taken place since the incident occurred," Smale said.

They want to hear from anyone who might have seen a 2005 Silver BMW saloon, registration GCE188, which was believed to have been involved.
