Staff illness has cancelled a number of Interislander ferry sailings until Tuesday afternoon.

The 3.45pm sailing from Wellington to Picton and the 8.35pm return sailings on the Aratere have been cancelled since Friday.

Interislander said it has space for customers on its other ferries, and the earlier sailings on the Aratere were not affected.

Normal service was expected to resume on Wednesday.

It follows months of disruptions with the ferry services due to engineering faults.

Kaitaki was out of service for more than a month due to a gearbox issue.

Interislander general manager Walter Rushbrook said the Kaitaki repair was "complicated" and needed a particular type of metal that was manufactured and shipped over from Germany, as well as "specialist technical support" from the Netherlands.
