A driver has been arrested after fleeing police and crashing into a car, causing injuries to a member of the public.

On Friday morning, Canterbury Metro Area Commander Superintendent Lane Todd said an officer attempted to pull over a male driver on Cranford Street in Christchurch because of his manner of driving.

He fled instead, and although not initiating a pursuit, police continued to follow the vehicle.

Shortly after, Todd said the driver crashed into another vehicle on Nancy Road in Mairehau.

"The member of the public received serious injuries and was transported to Christchurch Hospital," Todd said.

"The driver of the vehicle was arrested at the scene, they had sustained minor injuries."

Todd said a firearm was also found in the car of the arrested man.

Charges were still to come and the Serious Crash Unit would be investigating the crash.
