One person is in a critical condition after an electric scooter exploded while the battery was being charged in a Wellington apartment.

Crews were called to the explosion on Tory Street at about 5.30pm on Saturday.

The injured person was taken to hospital.

Fire and Emergency NZ Incident Controller Mike Dombroski is urging people only to use chargers that are supplied with the device being used, and not to leave them charging for long periods.

Dombroski has warned people to be careful with their electronics, especially if they have a large battery.

"Lithium ion batteries of that size belonging to scooters, e-bikes can produce quite a violent reaction to injure someone, and of course the resulting fire is dangerous in itself."

Dombroski said e-bike and e-scooter users should charge them outside or in a garage, far from any flammable materials.
