Police say a young person has died after being hit by a train in Mount Maunganui on Monday afternoon.
Emergency services were called to Hewletts Road just before 3pm.
On Monday evening, police said most of the roads in the area had reopened, but a small section of Hewlett's Road, MacDonald Street and Maunganui Road, remained closed.
KiwiRail said its locomotive engineer had been offered counselling and was being supported to take time off work.
The death will be referred to the Coroner.
