A motorcyclist has died in a crash involving a car in central Christchurch on Sunday night.
Superintendent Lane Todd said police signalled the motorcyclist to stop seconds before the crash.
The rider failed to stop but police did not pursue them when they fled, Todd said.
The crash happened at the intersection of Barbadoes Street and Edgeware Road about 11.40pm.
"The motorcyclist received immediate medical assistance but died at the scene," Todd said.
"The female driver of the car received minor to moderate injuries."
Police were referring the incident to the IPCA, and police serious crash and critical incident investigations were in their early stages.
They asked anyone who saw what happened and had not yet spoken to police to come forward.
