Three teenagers have been taken into custody after a driver fled from police in Auckland's Silverdale.

Officers noticed a vehicle at 2.18am on Monday which they believed had been stolen.

"The vehicle has attempted to ram the police unit before taking off at high speed," Waitematā North area prevention manager Senior Sergeant Roger Small said.

"A pursuit was initiated but quickly abandoned near Wainui due to weather."

Shortly after, the vehicle was spotted from the police Eagle helicopter travelling along Kaipara Coast Highway before being abandoned.

The occupants fled into nearby bush, but two gave themselves up and a third was tracked using the dog unit Delta.

Three people aged 15, 16 and 17 have been referred to Youth Aid Services.

The vehicle has since been towed for forensic examination.
