Powercuts will continue tonight for 188 properties in Tararua, after strong winds knocked out the electricity on Sunday.

Lines company Powerco said it was continuing to work on restoring power.

But downed lines in a forestry block in the Pongaroa/Ākitio area are proving a challenge.

Powerco said a helicopter was needed to re-string the overhead lines - and the weather so far had made this impossible.

A generation unit will arrive at Ākitio Community Centre this afternoon to provide an alternative power source.

The centre is operating as a welfare hub for affected residents.
