A rescue helicopter found itself in need of rescue in the Waikato region on Wednesday.

A Hamilton-based helicopter was on its way to rescue two trampers on the Wharauroa Track in Mount Pirongia Forest Park, but ran into trouble shortly after 4pm.

Chris Moody of the Philips Search & Rescue Trust said the chopper was forced to make a heavy landing, but no one was injured.

He said two additional helicopters were sent to recover the trampers and the three-person crew.
