The University of Auckland says a breakdown in communication over a planned pigeon cull was behind this morning's reports of an armed offender on the loose on campus.
This morning, the University of Auckland put up posts on its website and on Facebook warning of a male offender spotted on the city campus with a long weapon.
It said police were searching for the offender and people should avoid the area.
It was later confirmed the person was carrying out a planned bird cull.
University Vice-Chancellor Dawn Freshwater says a pigeon cull is carried out two or three times a year, and there was a clear communication protocol.
She said this morning there appears to have been a breakdown, which will be addressed.
