The Interislander's Kaiārahi ferry will be arriving an hour late into Picton this afternoon due to an engine sensor issue.
The ship experienced the problem sailing from Wellington, but there was no loss of propulsion.
KiwiRail said as a safety precaution, it would travel via the Northern Entrance to Picton.
The government has announced it will set up an expert advisory group to provide independent assurance on how to proceed with KiwiRail's Interislander ferry service.
Finance Minister Nicola Willis says she has already met twice with KiwiRail bosses over a "major cost blowout" in the project to replace the Interislander ferries.
The one-metre hole in ship Kaiārahi's hull meant in hundreds of bookings had to be cancelled.
