Firefighters are working to dampen hotspots of a six-hectare vegetation fire in Kirwee, west of Christchurch.

Several Fire and Emergency trucks and crews are at the site, on the southbanks of the Waimakariri River, this morning to monitor the blaze, which broke out on Thursday morning.

A spokesperson says it poses no risk to buildings or homes around the rural Selwyn township.
