The Rescue Coordination Centre had been leading the search but crews were sent home at dusk on last night.
Maritime New Zealand have put on hold a search and rescue mission for a commercial fisherman who fell from a boat off the coast of Hawke's Bay.
The man was reported missing from the Pacific Challenger vessel before 9pm on Monday night, 11 kilometres offshore Waimārama.
The Rescue Coordination Centre made the decision not to redeploy helicopters or boats to search for the missing fisherman.
Vessels in the area are still being asked to keep a look out.
Police, who were now the lead agency, were considering what to do next in the search.
