A man has been charged with arson after a large bush fire in Auckland's Helensville.

The fire was reported just after 3.30am on Thursday.

Police say a 25-year-old found near the blaze has been charged with arson.

Detective Senior Sergeant Adam Lough said the man would appear in the Waitākere District Court.

"While our investigation remains ongoing, Police are not currently seeking anyone else in relation to the fire."

Earlier, The Helensville Volunter Fire Brigade said the blaze was under control but they expected to be working at the scene for most of the day.

A section of State Highway 16 will remain closed for some time and locals will need to use other routes north.

Fire crews worked to protect a house at risk from the one hectare fire.

A police spokesperson said a man was found near the fire and was speaking to police.

A Helensville local, who did not want to be named, said he heard fireworks about 3.30am, shortly before the fire is believed to have started.

"I don't know whether it's connected or not, but I heard them pretty close to when it started," he said.

Another resident, Santiago Daniel had 16 cattle in a paddock near the fire which he had to move.

"I heard about the fire when I got up this morning through the news and realised I needed to go and quickly move the bulls."

The fire appeared to almost be out by 8.30am, but there was "smoke everywhere" and 15 fire engines and a helicopter on scene, Daniel said.

A house close to the fire was being monitored by firefighters, but Daniel said as far as he knew it was used as a retreat centre and no one was there overnight.

"It used to be an old farmer living there but he sold the place to a retreat centre, but it all looked fine when I was getting the cattle."
