One of the country's only Maori war memorials needs repairs. There are cracks in a shellrock obelisk at the Moutoa gardens in Wanganui.
Waatea News reports the memorial was built in 1925 and is topped by a marble statue of a man from the district, Herewini Wakarua. It has soil from four World War 1 battlefields buried below it.
Pakaitore Historic Reserve Board chair Rangi Wills says experts say it will cost more than $300,000 to repair.
He says the board is considering fencing the memorial so stonework does not fall on the public.
