Temperatures have again reached sub-zero in parts of the South.

At 7am, Christchurch central was the chilliest place in the country, at -3.3C. At its coldest, the garden city was at -3.7C overnight. MetService says a frosty start will lead into a fine day in Canterbury.

Timaru also dropped below zero, though at -0.9C, there was a slight improvement from the previous night's temperature of -2.3C.

Blenheim reached -0.2C and Queenstown - 0.7C.

Southwesterly winds are set to bring showers and cooler temperatures for the week, MetService said.

Showers will turn into longer periods of rain across the west of the North Island.

Midweek, winds were set to increase around the country and there will be a windy Wednesday on western shores.
