Police are investigating damage to a number of Auckland speed cameras.

Counties Manukau South Area Commander Inspector Joe Hunter said the cameras around Waiku appeared to have been a particular target.

"The stands that these cameras sit upon have been forced down or pushed over, and in one concerning incident, the bottom of a camera appears to have been shot by a firearm," he said in a statement.

Police wanted to remind people that working speed cameras were proven to be effective in reducing deaths and injuries on the roads, Hunter said.

"Damage to these cameras increases the chances of your loved ones not making it home safely."

Anyone with information about these incidents should call police on 105 and quote file number 240304/8260, or online by clicking "update report" and referencing the file number.
