A fire that broke out at a wrecking car yard in Ōtāhuhu has now been contained.

Emergency services were called to Titi Street just after 10:30am.

Fire and Emergency incident controller Phil Larcombe said eight fire trucks and multiple support vehicles including ladder trucks were responding to the fire at a single storey commercial premises used for wrecking cars.

"We ask people to stay away from the immediate area around Titi Street to avoid the smoke and to allow emergency teams to work," he said.

"Those close by should stay indoors with their windows shut."

A number of surrounding roads were closed, and diversions were in place, police said.
