A magnitude 5.1 magnitude earthquake has struck 10 kilometres west of Rotorua this morning.
It occurred at 2.19am.
It was classified as weak because it struck at a depth of 168 kilometres.
Nevertheless, more than 2200 people have reported feeling the shake, through the government's GeoNet website.
Almost all were in the lower North Island, and most reported experiencing shaking that was weak or light.
