The unexplained death of a 4-year-old Northland child in 2015 is now being investigated by police.
In a statement, Detective Senior Sergeant Christian Fouhy said the death of Alestra Kepa-Hati in October 2015 was being treated as unexplained.
Fouhy said Alestra was living with caregivers in rural Kaikohe at the time.
"As part of this investigation we are looking into the circumstances of her death, which at this stage is being treated as unexplained.
"Police, including the CIB, are making further inquiries into this matter, and are gathering information about the circumstances leading up to Alestra's death."
Officers were currently analysing all information they had and asked anyone who may have further information to come forward.
"The death of a child is a tragic and distressing incident for all involved and police are working to understand exactly what has happened.
