A widespread power outage in Christchurch on Tuesday morning was caused by a cable fault.
More than 1500 properties were cut off in the city's western suburbs for about two hours from 6.28am. Homes in Avonhead, Broomfield, Burnside, Hyde Park, Ilam, Russley and Upper Riccarton were affected.
It came as the temperature dropped below freezing. At 7.30am the temperature in Christchurch was -1C, according to MetService.
An Orion spokesperson said the outage was due to a cable fault.
Electricity was later restored to all 1576 properties.
