A service to help flood-affected Wairoa residents with housing comes into force on Tuesday.

Two weeks ago, the Hawke's Bay town was hit hard by floods - resulting in more than 400 properties being damaged.

The Temporary Accommodation Service (TAS) has been activated to support people displaced by the event.

TAS gives people short- to medium-term accommodation while housing repairs are undertaken following a Civil Defence emergency.

TAS response controller Fadia Mudafar said they can help people staying in accommodation provided by Civil Defence, or with friends or whānau but needing a longer-term solution.

"The TAS team will work with every household to establish their needs and connect them with available accommodation."

People can register online or call 0508 754 163.
