One person has died following a crash between two trucks on State Highway 1 in Marlborough.
The crash between Bush and Para roads in Tuamarina happened at 9.50am on Thursday.
One driver was flown to Nelson Hospital in a serious condition while the other driver died at the scene.
They were both the only people in either vehicle.
Police said the highway was expected to be closed for some time and diversions were being put in place.
"Police are providing support to the families of both drivers.
"The Commercial Vehicle Investigation Team and Serious Crash Unit are at the scene and the cause of the crash remains under investigation."
A detour is available for light vehicles only via Queen Charlotte Drive and State Highway 6.
