A man has been arrested following a manhunt in Whakatu, Hawke's Bay.

The Armed Offenders Squad, Police Dog Unit and Police Negotiation Team responded to a Station Road address, and a 37-year-old man was arrested without incident at 1.30pm.

Police said the man is likely to face charges.

Earlier, police asked residents on certain streets to stay inside while they looked for the person of interest.

Police set up cordons, including on State Highway 51, and urged people to avoid the area, just northeast of Hastings, while they search.

The affected areas were Station Road, Railway Road and State Highway 51, and the area within those three intersections.
