GNS Science says a new vent detected on Whakaari/White Island, which has been experiencing a minor eruption, is emitting an increase in volcanic ash.
Duty volcanologist Ery Hughes said a flight on Wednesday confirmed the increase in gas, and that the plumes are coming from a new source vent about 10 to fifteen metres across.
"These new data confirm there has been a change in the eruptive activity from the island since the beginning of August," GNS said in a statement.
"This is part of the typical eruptive cycles seen at Whakaari/White Island. Based on past eruptive episodes over the past 30 years, this activity could continue for some time, maybe weeks to months."
However, Hughes said the volcanic alert level remains at three and there is very low chance of the ash affecting the mainland.
GNS will continue to monitor the volcano for any changes in activity.
