A train and a truck have collided at in Stratford leaving one person seriously hurt.

The crash happened at the intersection of State Highway 3 and Radnor Road in Stratford about 6.40am on Wednesday.

Police said one person was being treated for serious injuries.

An RNZ reporter at the scene said the train was a diesel locomotive that had been pulling about half a dozen containerised wagons, and a truck appeared to be lying on its side.

State Highway 3 is blocked and emergency services had a detour in place at Beaconsfield Road for southbound traffic. Northbound traffic was also being diverted, although some heavy vehicles were being allowed through on SH3.

Motorists were advised to expect delays and use an alternative route where possible.

Hato Hone St John said a patient in a serious condition was taken by ambulance to Taranaki Base Hospital.

One ambulance and one rapid response vehicle responded.
