Major music awards finalists named

Some of New Zealand's finest composers have been shortlisted for three awards to be presented at the 2024 APRA Silver Scroll Awards on Tuesday 8 October.

Three finalists are up for the SOUNZ Contemporary Award, which celebrates excellence in contemporary composition. They are: 'In All Directions', a piece for orchestra by Wellington-based Karlo Margetić; 'Mirror Traps' for soprano and chamber ensemble by Dunedin-based composer Ihlara McIndoe, which features text by poet Hera Lindsay Bird; and the 'Convergence of Oceans' by Nathaniel Otley, also from Dunedin, which is composed for orchestra.

Five pieces are up for Best Original Music in a Film Award. They are: Arli Liberman and Troy Kingi forThe Mountain, Dana Lund for Joika, Karl Sölve Steven for Uproar, and Karl Sölve Steven and Jason Smith for Never Look Away.

The Best Original Music in a Series Award finalists are: David Feauai-Afaese and Navakatoa Tekela-Pule (Hanisi Garue) for Still Here Season 2, Karl Sölve Steven for Testify, and Karl Sölve Steven and Rob Thorne for Black Coast Vanishings.

APRA will also honour 2024 Te Whare Taonga Puoro O Aotearoa-NZ Music Hall of Fame inductee Mike Nock.

All awards will be presented at St James Theatre, Wellington on Tuesday 8 October.
