Police have released the name of the man killed in Onehunga on Saturday night.

He was 50-year-old Anthony Edward Rangi.

Police were called to a Selwyn Street house shortly before 10pm after a man was reported to have been shot.

A 32-year-old man appeared before Judge David Sharp in Auckland District Court on Monday afternoon, charged with murder.

Granted interim name suppression, he was supported by about a dozen friends and family who he gestured towards during the appearance.

He was wearing an unzipped boiler suit and blew a kiss to a woman in the public gallery.

The man was remanded in custody to next appear in the High Court at Auckland on 18 September.

As he left the courtroom his friends called out, "I love you, bro."

The homicide was one of two in Auckland at the weekend. The other involved an alleged stabbing of a man in Mt Wellington, for which two people are facing murder charges.
