The coroner has found that the death of a man at Whanganui Prison while facing charges for the attempted murder of two police officers was self-inflicted.

Dolphy Te Tawhero Kohu was arrested in August 2015 on a number of charges after a manhunt through the central North Island.

Six other people, including Kohu's girlfriend and members of his whānau, were also arrested for various charges.

Kohu was found dead in his cell on 22 January 2016.

Coroner Amelia Steel found Kohu's death to be "self-inflicted".

The coroner's report found in the months leading up to Kohu's death, he had started to experience anxiety and had engaged with the prison's psychiatrist and counselling service a number of times.

He was subject to six At Risk Assessments but had denied any thoughts of self harm.

Steel accepted a report from the Inspectorate of Corrections that there was no indication that Kohu was planning to end his life.

No recommendations were made.
