Wellington's Wētā FX has scored two nominations at the British Film Academy Awards (BAFTAs) for their work on Better Man and Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes.

Robbie Williams' biopic Better Man, directed by Michael Gracey (The Greatest Showman), depicts the British pop star as a CGI chimpanzee.

Wētā FX's Luke Millar, David Clayton, and Keith Herft received a nod in the Best Special Visual Effects category for bringing to life actor Jonno Davies' movements as a chimpanzee which had Williams' mannerisms and voice.

The team also digitally recreated 226 different costumes and 50 different hairstyles from the singer's life.

Another team from the studio - Erik Winquist, Paul Story, Stephen Unterfranz - have been nominated in the same category for digitally creating ape characters and environments on Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes, directed by Wes Ball (The Maze Runner).

"We are incredibly proud of our teams' work and are delighted to see their commitment, innovative thinking, and creativity recognised on the global stage by the British Academy of Film and Television Arts," Wētā FX interim chief executive David Wright said.

They will be up against some tough competition in the category, with nominees Dune: Part Two, Wicked, and Gladiator II.

Overall, it was the Papal thriller Conclave which led nominations at Britain's top movie honours.

Last year's main category winners at the BAFTAs also took out Oscar awards.
