A Waikato high school said it closed on Friday out of an abundance of caution after receiving two threats on Thursday.
In an update to parents, the Hauraki Plains College board of trustees said it wanted to provide clarity on the actions taken to ensure the safety of their students and staff.
"Earlier today, the school became aware of an anonymous video circulating that contained specific threats of harm," they said. "In response, we immediately consulted with the police and followed their expert direction."
The board of trustees said they followed police instructions with regards to sharing information and keeping the Ngatea school running.
"The police identified a person of interest and conducted questioning. Due to this person, being outside of our region, they advised that it was not necessary to enter a full lockdown at the college but maintained a presence on-site to respond if required."
Police confirmed they were speaking to a young person in relation to the video, and did not believe there was any further threat to public safety.
They said enquiries into the matter were ongoing.
"We acknowledge that this has been an unsettling event and we thank the community for their understanding while it was resolved."
The board of trustees said the school received another threat on Thursday night, which was unsubstantiated at that time.
"While we are unable to verify its legitimacy at this time, the details have been provided to the police, and we are awaiting further instruction. Out of an abundance of caution, a decision has been made to close the school for instruction on Friday, 28 February 2025."
Police said they were not aware of any new threat having been made relating to the school's closure on Friday.
The school has been approached for comment.
