An 18-year-old is before the courts and a 14-year-old has been referred to YouthAid after a police car was damaged in Auckland on Thursday morning.

Police tracked two Toyota Aqua's travelling at high speed on Godley Road in Green Bay about 3am.

The vehicles were followed by the Police Eagle helicopter, with one tracked to Glen Eden where it was abandoned on Holdens Road.

When police arrived, the driver and passenger of the vehicle threw bottles of alcohol at the police car, damaging it before fleeing on foot.

They had been seen retrieving a number of items from the backseat.

The pair were found and arrested shortly after.

Auckland City West Area Commander, Inspector Alisse Robertson, said officers didn't signal for the vehicles to stop, calling in the Eagle helicopter instead.

"Police are investigating this event in connection with a burglary at a Blockhouse Bay business prior to the cars coming to our attention," Robertson said.

"Police won't tolerate this kind of reckless behaviour, which has the potential to cause harm to our staff and the wider public."

The 18-year-old has been charged with stealing a vehicle and intentional damage, and is expected to appear in Auckland District Court next week.
