Whanganui's former mayor Michael Laws has apologised for comments he made on his radio show about Governor-General Sir Anand Satyanand.
During his RadioLive talkback show last Monday, Mr Laws said Sir Anand was "a large, fat man", and that "that seemed slightly incongruous on an Indian".
Sir Anand, who has Fijian-Indian heritage, was also the target of comments earlier that day by broadcaster Paul Henry, who implied on Television New Zealand's Breakfast programme that he was not a real New Zealander.
In a statement, Mr Laws says he met RadioLive managers on Monday to discuss his comments.
He says he apologises to Sir Anand for his comments, which were uncharitable and inappropriate.
