New Zealand's oldest army unit marked 150 years this weekend with celebrations in New Plymouth.

The 5th Wellington West Coast Taranaki Battalion Group goes back to the country's first formal military unit, the Taranaki Rifle Volunteer Corps, formed in 1848 for the New Zealand Wars.

The Wellington West Coast Regiment and the Taranaki Regiment fought in South Africa and both World War I and II. They were combined into a single regiment in 1948.

Now a territorial battalion, members have recently served in East Timor, Solomon Islands and Sinai.

The battalion paraded through New Plymouth at 1.30pm on Saturday. A church service was to be held on Sunday.
