Lydia Ko has surged up the leaderboard in the second day of play at the Paris Olympics.

Ko finished her round at five-under for the day and five-under overall, putting her in the top few competitors heading into the third day of play.

Earlier, Dame Lisa Carrington and her women's kayak fours crew - Alicia Hoskin, Olivia Brett and Tara Vaughan - took gold in the 500m Olympic final.

The medal win adds to the bronze won by sailors Micah Wilkinson and Erica Dawson in the mixed multihull Nacra race in Marseille earlier on Thursday evening.

The men's K4 team did not fare so well in their final, finishing at the back of the pack in eighth.

Meanwhile, speed climber Julian David has been eliminated in the men's speed climbing quarterfinal after taking on the world record-holder, Sam Watson of the US.

And Maddi Wesche is through to the Olympics shot put final after throwing 19.25m on her second attempt in the qualifying round.
