Who will be mayor in the Far North will come down to special votes after the two top contenders switched places this afternoon.

Previous deputy mayor Ann Court was initially in the lead, but preliminary results released this afternoon have seen her switch places with runner-up Moko Tepania.

If successful, Tepania will be the first Māori Far North mayor.

Special votes will be counted tomorrow and final results are expected to be released later this week.
