Rena owner considers legal position

7:16 am on 6 April 2012

The company owning the Rena is considering its legal position on a charge laid against it by Maritime New Zealand.

Daina Shipping of Greece is charged under the Resource Management Act with discharging a harmful substance from a ship into the coastal environment, after the vessel grounded off Tauranga last year.

The charge carries a maximum penalty of $NZ600,000, plus a penalty of $NZ10,000 for each day the offending continues.

A spokesperson for Costamare, Daina's parent company, says the company acknowledges the charges and will discuss its next moves with its legal advisors.

He would not say anything further as the case is now before the courts.

The proceedings are due to begin in Tauranga District Court on 25 May.
