Helicopter used to recover debris from island

Bags of debris from the wrecked container ship Rena are being retrieved by helicopter from Motiti Island in the Bay of Plenty.

Environmental clean-up company Braemar Howells is using the aircraft on Tuesday as some parts of the island are either inaccessible or difficult to reach.

Another container has washed ashore on rocks at Bowentown and 27 possible containers on the seabed have been identified by sonar.

A beach groomer is also being used to take plastic beads that spilled from a container and pose a potential risk to wildlife from the beach on Matakana Island.
