The Government says New Zealand's position on genetic engineering is not up for negotiation at the Trans Pacific Patnership trade talks.
While the public is not privy to the trade negotiations, the Sustainability Council said it is clear that the United States seeks major changes to legislation in other countries to remove what it regarded as obstacles to the growing and selling of genetically modified organisms.
But Trade Minister Tim Groser's office told Radio New Zealand's Rural News that the Government has no intention of changing New Zealand's legislative framework governing genetically modified organisms - through any trade agreement including the TPP.
