Latest - The West Indies are on the verge of a stunning home series win over England at stumps on day three of the deciding test in Grenada.

After a day when West Indies' young wicketkeeper Joshua Da Silva scored a maiden test century before Kyle Mayers weaved his medium pace bowling magic, England were only 10 runs ahead with two wickets in hand in their second innings, on 103 for eight at the close.

A healthy contingent of home fans danced in the stands, silencing England's usually vocal Barmy Army, who must have been in disbelief witnessing yet another England meltdown.

The ghosts of Australia in the recent past came back to haunt England in the Caribbean in a batting collapse that all but ensured West Indies of a stunning series victory.

Though not the first time of late that England have been found wanting, former players Steve Harmison and David Gower sounded almost shocked in the commentary box.

"I didn't see that (coming) at all," Harmison said after England limped to 103 for eight in their second innings at stumps on day three in Grenada for an overall lead of 10 runs.

"The character that has been shown this series, I thought England had turned a little bit of a corner but that was Australia all over again."

He was referring to the 4-0 Ashes drubbing over the southern summer although there were extenuating circumstances for that series result, not least a world class Australian bowling attack led by Pat Cummins.

Only opener Alex Lees, who struck a disciplined 31 from 132 balls, and Jonny Bairstow (22) reached double figures, leaving England batting coach Marcus Trescothick to say the players were "gutted" at what had just unfolded.

Phoenix snatch last-gasp win

The Wellington Phoenix have put aside the absence of coach Ufuk Talay to claim a last-gasp win in football's A-League.

A goal to Nicholas Pennington with the last kick of the game secured a 2-1 victory over 10-man Perth in Sydney on Saturday night.

Talay was isolating from the team after testing positive for Covid-19.

Ben Waine gave Wellington a deserved 1-0 halftime lead, chipping Perth goalkeeper Liam Reddy in the 37th-minute.

The Glory were back on level terms early in the second half after a goal from Liam Fitzgerald, but shortly after were down to 10-men when Osama Malik was red-carded for a foul on Waine.

Perth hang on until the seventh-minute of added time, when Pennington drilled home a finish from a corner.

The result, coming after back-to-back defeats, lifted the Phoenix back level with sixth-placed Sydney FC, but with three games in hand.

SVG gets second win of Supercars season

Shane van Gisbergen has batted off a question about aggressive driving after claiming his second win of the new Supercars season.

The defending champion came from fifth on the grid to take out race one in round two of the championship in Tasmania on Saturday.

Van Gisbergen jumped to third after the first corner, before pulling off back-to-back moves on Will Davison and Cam Waters at the tight hairpin bend at Symmons Plains Raceway.

From there, the Red Bull driver headed off the field for his 56th career win in Supercars.

"I didn't know if I was going to be able to pass them," Van Gisbergen told Fox Sports.

"What a great race and had to rub them up a bit but that's what we're here to do and hopefully it was good show for everyone."

Asked about the aggressive nature of the race, van Gisbergen said: "Would you rather I followed them? Yeah, good."

Van Gisbergen reclaimed the championship lead, with two races to follow in Tasmania on Sunday.

Lawson on top in F2

Liam Lawson has gone to the top of the Formula Two standings after winning the sprint race at round two in Saudi Arabia.

Starting from sixth, the young New Zealander steadily picked his way past his rivals to make it three podiums from three races to start the new season.

"We managed to survive the first 70 per cent of the race and we were running in third during the second restart," Lawson said.

"I was able to grab the lead in the last couple of laps. The car was really, really fast."

The result took the 20-year-old Red Bull junior driver to 34 points, seven clear of secon-placed Juri Vips heading into the feature race early on Monday morning (NZ time).

World title for Kiwi freeskier

New Zealand's global success in snow sports continues.

Ohakune skier Jess Hotter has wrapped up the Freeride World Tour title, despite crashing out of the final event in Switzerland.

The 28-year-old was the first Kiwi to claim the overall title since record keeping began in 2008.

"I don't really have any words," Hotter said.

"I am just happy that I am down and walking and I am pretty stoked to take the overall".

Despite crashing and receiving a 'no score' due to losing her skis, her previous results on the Tour this season means she still secured the overall champion title by 2500 points.

Compatriot Craig Murray was was looking strong on his return from injury, but came unstuck in the latter stages of his run.

Debut F1 pole for Perez

Mexican Sergio Perez stormed to a stunning maiden pole position under the floodlights in a crash-interrupted qualifying session for the Saudi Arabian Grand Prix.

The Red Bull driver left his best for last as he denied Charles Leclerc and Carlos Sainz a Ferrari front-row lockout.

World champion Max Verstappen was fourth.

Qualifying around the challenging Jeddah layout, made up mainly of high-speed blind sweeps and flat-out straights, was halted by two red flags.

Mick Schumacher crashed heavily during the second phase, bringing the session to a halt for nearly an hour as track workers repaired barriers and cleaned the track of debris and oil.

The German Haas driver, who did not appear to have any injuries following an initial assessment at the track, was taken to an armed forces hospital in Jeddah for precautionary checks.

Seven-times world champion Lewis Hamilton made a shock early exit from qualifying and would line up 16th in his Mercedes.

Swiatek replaces Barty as No 1

Poland's Iga Swiatek said capturing the women's world number one ranking was a "surreal" achievement, with the 20-year-old set to replace retired Ash Barty at the top of the rankings.

Swiatek clinched the ranking after defeating Viktorija Golubic 6-2 6-0 in the second round of the Miami Open, becoming the first Polish player to ascend to the No 1 position in singles.

She will become the new world No 1 when the WTA rankings are released on April 4

At 20 years, 308 days old, Swiatek will be the youngest player to make her No 1 debut since Caroline Wozniacki in 2010.

"It's a dream come true, for sure," Swiatek said. "It's that kind of thing that I wanted to happen someday, but I didn't really know that it's going to be possible for me.

Swiatek who won her maiden Grand Slam title at the French Open in 2020 and has already won titles in Doha and Indian Wells this year.
